Magic

Human magic is rare but accepted in the world. However, ritual magic is different. It is virtually non existent, often dark, and looked upon with great suspicion.

Humans have no ability to create magic items, and any such items come from Elven craftsmanship. However, though it was not the case for the elves, once a human uses an elven item, it bonds with that person, and can there ever after only be used by said person. As such, usable magic items are now virtually extinct due to the elven defeat in the great war five centuries ago.

Thus, any active magic item is now very valuable. Not so much for its actual usefulness, but simply because of its rarity. Possessing a functioning magical item is status symbol few can match. Something as useless as a pebble that produces a faint, pleasant smell once per day might garner a few hundred gold pieces.
